Chagall studied 1900-1905 at the Vitebsk Art School under Yehuda Pen and from 1907 to 1908 in St. Petersburg at the School for the Promotion of the Arts nad at the studio Leon Bakst, and Mstistlav Dobujinsky. He lived in Paris before the first World War and returned to Russia to became head of the graphical department of the Vitebsk Art School. He left Russia after a dispute with Malevich for Moscow and later for Paris.
