Iliazd (Ilya Zdanevich) was born in Tbilisi to a
Polish father and a Georgian Mother. He studied Law at the St.
Petersburg University where he and his brother Kirill, along with their
friend Mikhail Ledantiu became admirers of the work of Niko
Piromanashvili about whom he wrote his first article. In 1913 he
published his monograph on Larionov and Goncharova under de name Eli
Eganbiuri and became involved with the Russian futurist movement. From
1917 to 1919 he live in Tbilisi where he published several collections
of Zaum poetry. In 1918 he joined A. Kruchenykh in de group 41° and
adopted (in 1919) the name Iliazd. In October 1920 he left Georgia via
Constantinople for Paris. During the forty years he lived in Paris,
Iliazd was active in various fields but foremost in the creation of
artists' books together with Picasso Max Ernst, Miro and others.
