Vasilev graduated 1952 the Moscow Art School and studied 1952-1958 at the Surikov Art Institute in Moscow under Falk and Favorskii. From 1958 till 1990 he illustrated children's book together with Erik Bulatov. In 1990 he emigrated to New York where he since lived and worked.
