Prokhorov grew up in Orenburg and studied at the Penza Art School. From 1923 to 1927 he studied at the Petrograd Academy of art under D. Mitrokhin. After graduation he worked for the Leningrad publishers mostly in wood cuts or water colours. In 1935 he was arrested and he returned to Orenburg.
