Lebedev studied 1910-1911 under Franz Rubo.
From 1912 till 1916
he was an extern student at the St. Petersburg Academy of Art,
simultaneously attending at the School for Painting, Drawing and Sculpting under Mikhail Bernstein and Leonid Shervud in St.
Petersburg. He designed illustrations for the journals
Satirikon and Argus during the pre-revolutionary years. Between 1918
and 1921he was a teacher at the
Leningrad Vkhutemas. In 1920
and 1921 he worked for the Rosta windows. In 1924 he started working in
close collaboration with Samuil Marshak for the publishing house Raduga.
From 1924 till 1933 he was head
of the department of the children's books of
the Leningrad branch of the state publihers. He was a
people's artist of the RSFSR and a corresponding member of the Academy
of Arts.
