Zaretzki studied at the Tver Cavalry College and 1911-12 at the drawingschool of OPKh. He studied at the Imperial Academy St. Petersburg 1913-14 under Kardovskii. He succeeded V. Markhov as editor of the journal Vistavochoni Vestnik. He emigrated in 1920 to Berlin where he remained untill 1931. He was chairman of the Union of Russian Artists in Berlin. In 1931-1951 he lived in Prague. In 1951 he emigrated to Paris
