Trofimov graduated 1899 from the Moscow Stroganov Art School where he befriended I. Nivinskii. From 1911 to 1922 he worked as the artistic director of the Kolomenkin Arts and Crafts school. In 1924 he became head of the painting departemnt of the Omsk Art College. In 1930 he moved to Zagorsk
