Parain studied under Konchalovskii at the Stroganov school in Moscow and after at the VKhUTEMAS where she graduated in 1922. In 1926 she married Brice Parain, who was a cultural attaché of the French Embassy in Moscow. In 1926 she emigrated to France and from 1930 on she worked as an illustrator for the publisher Gallimard (series: Contes de Chat Perché) and Flammarion (series: Père Castor).
