Count Sergei Levitsky, a lawyer by training, fell in love with photography and mastered photographic techniques in Paris. After his return to St. Petersburg in 1849 he opened Letopis [chronicle], a daguerreotype studio. Levitsky was court photographer to Emperors Alexander II, Alexander III and Nicholas II, continuing until his death in 1898.
