Exter graduated 1907 from the Kiev Art School. In 1908 she left for Paris where she studied at the Academy de la Grande Chaumière. In 1909-1910 she exhibted at the Izdebski salon, Union of the Youth and Knave of Diamonds. In 1917 she worked as a designer for Kamerny theater. In 1918-1921 she tought at the School for decorative Art in Kiev. From 1924 onwards she lived and worked in Paris.
