Chekhonin studied at the Art College in St. Petersburg and 1897-1900 at the Tenischeva School under Repin. In 1912 he became a member of the Mir Iskusstva.
1913-1917 he was dean of the School for enamel art in Rostov-Yaroslavskii. 1918-1923 and 1925-1927 he was the artistic director of the State Porcelain
Factory in Leningrad. In 1928 he emigrated to Paris. He died in the
south-west of Germany on his return to Paris.
