Zvorykin, son of a wealthy Moscow merchant family, studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. From 1898 till 1919 he was active as graphic artist and illustrated many books for the Sytin, Knebel and other publishers. In the 1910's he designed religious paintings and decorated churches. In 1915, together with I. Bilibin, V. Vasnetsov, M. Nesterov and N. Roerich, he founded the 'Society for the Revival of Russian Art' In 1921 he emigrated from the Crimea via Constantinople and Cairo to Paris. Zvorikine was a prolific book illustrator not only in Russia but also in Paris. In 1928 he took part in the exhibition of book-art in Brussels. He died in Paris some say in 1942 others in 1945. |
