Zimin studied from 1919 to 1924 at the Architectural Faculty of the Moscow Higher Art School under N. Ladovskii. During the 1920s he maily worked as a designer of banners for revolutionary hollidays and as a designer of exhibitions. At the end of the 1920s he started making photograms and since worked mainly as photographer. After the Second Workd War he worked as a designer of the Agricultural Exhibition VDNKh. He was married to the poetess Alla Alsufeva.
