Zabotin studied from 1902 to 1905 at the Polytechnical institute and at the State Art School in Kiev. In 1906 he moved to Karlsruhe where he studied architecture at the Technical University until 1908 when he started studying at the Art Academy of Karlsruhe. In 1934 his work was forbidden by the Nazi regime and 1939 Zabotin fled to Italy where he was rescued from a camp in Calabria in 1943. In 1944 he emigrated to the USA and settled in new York. In 1956 he returned to Karslruhe.
