Yankilevsky got his first art lessons from his father, the painter Boris Yankilevsky. From 1949 to 1956 Yankilevsky studied at the Moscow Surikov Art Institute. In 1962 he graduated from the Moscow Polygraphic Institute where he had studied under Elie Beliutin. From 1962 onwards he was deeply involved in the Moscow Unofficial art group and took part in the famous 1962 Manege exhibition, where his paintings were strongly criticized by Nikita Khrushchev. The following years he worked as a designer for Moscow publishing houses. In 1989 he emigrated to Paris where he since lived and worked. |
