Son of estate servants in the St. Petersburg province, Eduard Wiiralt grew up in Estonia, where his family moved to in 1909. Wiiralt studied 1919 at the Anton Starkopf studio of sculpture in Tartu, but due to the Estonian war of indepence he continued his studies 1922-23 in Dresden under Selmar Werner. In 1924, returned to Estonia where he graduated from the Tartu Pallas as a graphic artist and sculptor. Between 1925 and 1939 he lived and Paris, and between 1940 and 1945 in Estonia. In the fall of 1946 he returned via Sweden to Paris where he died of gastric cancer in 1954.
