Werefin, daughter of a noble Russian Commander, studied 1880 with Ilia Repin in St. Petersburg and 1883 with Ilarion Prianishnikov in Moscow. In 1892 she started a relationship with Alexei Jawlensky that would last for 27 years. In 1907 she created her first expressionist paintings. In 1914 Werefkin and Jawlensky fled to Switzerland where they 1918 setteld in Ancona. In 1921 Jawlensky moved to Wiesbaden and the relationship ended. |
