Dziga Vertov, born David Abelevich Kaufman, was a pioneer of the soviet newsreel and documentary film. In 1916 and 1917 he studied medicine in Petrograd. After the revolution he worked as a film editor at The Moscow Cinema Weekly. In 1922 he started the Kino-Pravda film series and became one of the promotors of the Soviet documentary film.
