Boris Velikovsky, son of a Jewish family, was born in the small town of Propoisk, now Slavgorod in Belarus. From 1898 to 1904 he studied architecture at the St. Petersburg Institute of Civil Engineering. He moved to Moscow where he lived and worked as an architect
