Vasnetsov studied in 1910 with A.I. Stolbov in Vyatka and 1921-26 at the SVOMAS in Petrograd/Leningrad under Vakhrameev. From 1926 to 28 he studied under Malevich at the Institute of Artistic Culure in Leningrad. In 1928 he started working with the Department of Children's and Youth Literature of the State Publishing House, under the artistic direction of Vladimir Lebedev and took lessons with him. In 1929 his first illustrated book 'Karabash' by Vitalii Bianki was published and reprinted in 1930. Vasnetsov mainly worked as an illustrator but was also a prolific painter who never had an exhibition of his paintings during his lifetime. In 1946 he became an Honoured artist of the RSFSR. He was a master in the themes of Russian folklore, fairy tales and nursery rhymes, for which he was best known.
