Vasilieff studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under Leonid Pasternak. After the revolution he taught 1918-1919 at the Moscow Svomas, In 1919 he emigrated to Istambul and in 1922 to Berlin where he studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar. In 1923 he setteld in New York.
