Vakhrushov studied from 1886 to 1888 at the Petersburg School of Drawing, Sculpture and Architecture and from 1889 to 1897 at the Academy of Arts where he took lessons with I. Repin. Between 1897 and 1914  Vakhrushov lived and worked mainly in the Ukraine before settling in his place of birth Totma, near Vologda. Both in Totma and Vologda he was active in establishing local museums for which he collected folk art and ecclesiastical art. He died of complications after pneumonia in Totma where he had lived and worked.
