Born Ryazan, 10 July 1937

 

From 1948 to 1955 Ustinov studied at the Moscow Central Art School (MSKHSH). In 1961, he graduated from the Moscow Surikov Art Institute where he had studied at the Graphic department of B. Dehterev, Y. Reiner, M. Cheremnykh, and woodcut under M. Matorin. Ustinov started drawing cartoons for several magazine, but soon realized that the cartoon was not his thing, and began to illustrated books about village life, nature and animals. For a few years, Ustinov was drawing animals at the Zoo. In 1963 he began to contribute to the children's magazine 'Murzilka' where he collaborated with great artists such as V. Konashevich E. Charushin, and V. Vasnetsov. In 1996, Ustinov received the Gold Medal of the Academy of arts. In 2000, he was awarded the title of people's artist of Russia. In 2007 he became the winner of the fourth all-Russian competition of works for children and youth. He lives and works in Moscow.
