Ulyanov studied 1888-1889 at V. Meshkov's studio in Moscow. From 1898 to 1900 he attended the Moscow Art College where he studied under V. Serov, N. Nevrov, and I. Prianishnikov. In 1900 het started teaching at the Zvantseva Art-school and 1915 at the Stroganov Institute that after the revolution was incorporated in the Moscow Svomas and Vkhutemas. Ulyanov mainly worked as a painter-portraitist and as a teacher.
