Tsekhanovskii studied in Paris before 1911 and 1911-1914 at the Moscow Art School. In 1919-1923 he worked as a theatre designer for the Red Army. From 1924 he did design and illustrations for children's books. In 1928-1941 he design animation films for the Leningrad film works. After 1942 he worked for the animation film studios in Moscow.
