Toropin studied at the Vitebsk School of Art in 1941 but due to the war he was evacuated and volunteered for the Red Army and joined the technical aviation staff. became . In 1945 he studied at the Riga Academy of art and started working as an illustrator for the Latvian State Publishing house.
