From 1945 to 1951 Tokmakov studied at the Moscow Higher Industrial Art School (formerly the Stroganov Institute) under Pavel Kuznetsov and Aleksandr Kuprin. He started working as an illustrator for the State Publishing House He illustrated more than 300 books and also designed illustrations for journals such as Murzilka. He lived and worked in Moscow.
