Tikhomirov studied 1934 at the painting department of the Baku Art College. In 1944 he moved to Moscow and studied at the Surikov Art Institute under A. Osmerkin untill expelled in 1948 for 'formalistic tendencies' in his work. Between 1949 and 1976 he decorated for sever years the State Lenin Library in Moscow
