Rachel Marcus grew up in Lodz (then Russian Empire) where her parents promoted her artistic ambition and sent her in 1911 to the Munich Art Academy. She married the actor Julius Szallit and settled in Berlin. She became a member of the Berlin Secession and was active in the Revolutionary November group. She worked as a painter and illustrator of Yiddish and Hebrew books. In 1933 Szali-Marcus fled to France (her husband had commited suicide in 1919) where she was deported to Auschwitz in 1942. |
