Sysoev had no formal art education. Since 1975, he took an active part in uncensored exhibitions in Moscow and Leningrad. He had no publications in the USSR because the authorities considered his work anti-Soviet. In 1983 he was arrested and served til 1985 in a criminal labour camp. In 1989 he emigrated to Berlin and was chief editor of the literary and artistic almanac “Ostrov”.
