Surikov studied from 1868 to 1869 at the St. Petersburg School for the Encourigment of the Arts and from 1869 to 1875 at the Academy of Art under Pavel Chistyakov. In 1881 he became one of the members of the 'peredvizhniki' (The Wanderers). He is best known for his historical paintings
