Sumbatashvili graduated 1941 from the Tiflis Art Academy. He worked as the chief artist for the State Academic Theatre in Tiflis and later for the Marjanishvili Theatre. In 1958 he moved to Mosco where he worked for the Vakhtangov Theatre.
