Stückgold son a Jewish merchant in Warsaw, studied at the Warsaw Polytechnic institute and later Chemistry in Zürich and Philosophy in Paris. He worked as as the manager of a chemical plant in Germany. He joined the Polish movement for freedom from Russia and was detained in Moscow and St. Petersburg. In 1907 he started studying art in Warsaw and had to flee to Munich where he studied at the Hollosy Art School. In 1908 he moved to Paris and became a student of Henri Matisse. In 1913 he moved to Munich and opened an art school which he ran until 1921.
