Princess Zinaida Shakhovskaya, a distinguished essayist and historian, died 2001 in Paris. She was born in Moscow in 1906, and fled after the Revolution over Constantinople to Brussels before settling in Paris. During World War II she joined the French and Belgian Resistance movement, and worked as a war correspondent. After the war she lived for some time in Moscow, where her husband worked for the Belgian embassy. From 1968-1978 she was editor of the Paris newspaper ‘Russkaya Mysl.
