An illustrated monthly especially printed to
propagate the Soviet Union abroad. The large format magazine (until
1960: 400 x 300 mm and after 1960: 340 x 265 mm.) was also published in
Russian, but the main aim of this monthly was to reach out to foreign,
and not domestic readers. It is the Successor to SSSR na stroike, the
USSR in construction that was published from 1930 to 1949, when Stalin
decided that the Soviet Union was no longer under construction. Between
March 1950 and November 1990 there were 488 issues published. The LS Collection has the
complete set except for issue no. 12, 1963. Whether issue no. 12,
December 1990 ever was printed is not known.
The monthly was published
in Russian, German, English and French and 15 other languages and the main place in the magazine was occupied by
documentary photographs, photo essays and reporting nonfiction
articles. The magazine covered the life of the peoples of the USSR, the
achievements of the Soviet economy, science, technology, culture, art,
and showed the life of the Soviet people. Much attention was paid to the
photo chronicle of the foreign policy of the USSR. There were also
colour reproductions, fairy tales for children, as well as a section for
women and answers to questions from foreign readers.
