From 1898 to 1904 Sokolov studied Under Petr Romanovskii in Iaroslavl. From 1904 to 1907 he studied at the Moscow Stroganov Institute under Noakovskii Iaguzhinskii. During the first World War he served in Petrograd en became one of the leaders of the Baltic sailors. From 1918 to 1920 he taught at the Iaroslavl Vkhutemas. In 1923 he moved to Moscow and taught at the Moscow Art School. In 1938 he was arrested and sentenced to 7 years in a labour camp at the Taiga station. Due to his dire state of health he was prematurely released and lived untill 1947 in Rybinsk. In 1947 he died of stomach cancer in a Moscow hospital. In 1958 he was rehabilitated. |
