In 1950Shvartsman started studying at the Moscow Stroganov Art Institute. From 1957 to 1963 he worked in Libertsy (near Moscow) as a monumentalist and designer of advertisments and posters. During these years he developed his artistic-phlosophical system 'Hieratism'. The first personal exhibition of his works took place in yhe Moscow Tretiakov Gallery in 1994.
