Gala Shubina graduated 1928 from the Leningrad Art Academy, where she had studied under D. Mitrokhin and E. Kruglikova. In her youth she was captivated by the art of Leon Bakst and other members of the Wiorld of Art group. In 1930 she moved to Moscow and worked as a portrait-painter and a poster-designer.
