Shtykin studied at the Penza Art Academy before he joined in 1921 the department of lithography from the VKhUTEMAS in Moscow, where he studied under V.Favorskii, V.Falileev, P.Miturich and N.Kupreyanov. He graduated in 1928 with a set of litho's entitled "On the cultural front". He started teaching at the Moscow VKhUTEIN and at the Moscow Polygraphic institute in 1929.
