Marlen (Marx-Lenin) Shpindler spent his yous in Uzbekistan and moved in 1941 with his parents to Moscow. He studdied from 1947 to 1950 at the Art School of the Mosfilm studios. In 1968 he worked at the Promgrapik, an advertising institute. Because of his non conformist art and his deviating behaviour he was 1976 sentenced to 15 years in prison. in 1987 he was released and had in 1996 his first personal exhibition in the Moscow the State Tretiakov Gallery.
