Shavykin studied 1922-1928 at the Kiev art school under L. Kramarenko. In 1927 he moved to Kharkov where he taught at the Kharkov Art Institute. In 1939 he participated at the execution of the Ukrainian pavilion at the Moscow VDNKh. He lived and worked  in Kharkov and Kiev.
