Shaikhet (born Abram Shoikhet) could not enter higher education due to his poor jewish origins. In 1922 he started working as a retoucher in a private photo studio in Moscow and had in 1923 his first photographs publsihed. After 1926 he started making photo reportage for the important magazines as Ogonek, USSR in Construction and others.
