Shagin, father of Dmitrii Shagin,
studied from 1946 to 1951 at the secondary Art School of the Leningrad
Art Academy and from 1952 to 1954 at the Leningrad Tavricheskii Art
College. He joined the Leningrad nonconformist artist with its informal
leader Aleksandr Arefev. His painting were forbidden and he was under
compulsary treatment in a psychiatric clinic.
