Serov studied 1872-1873 under Karl Köpping in München, in 1874-1875 in Paris, in 1878-1880 in Moscow and fom 1880 to 1885 at the Imperial Academy in St. Petersburg under Chistiakov. He traveled all over Europe between 1885 and 1910. In 1886 and 1896 he made theatre designs for the Opera Privé of Mamontov and in 1905-1908 designs for Stanislavski's theater. In 1894 he became a member of the  Peredvizhniki group.
