Semenov had no formal art training when he started drawing caricatures while in high school. After graduating he had several jobs and in 1931 send a caricature to the Crocodile Magazine in Moscow, the first of many. During the Second Wolrd War he worked for the Red Fleet Magazine. He lived and worked also as an illustrator in Moscow.
