Segall, son of a torah writer, studied in Vilnius under Antokolskij, who advised him to go to Paris. On his way to Paris he stopped in Berlin and applied (May 1907) for the Royal Academy of Art. in 1909 he took part in the Berlin "Freie Sezession" and won the Liebermann price. He rebelled against the strickt rules of the Academy and had to leave. He went to Dresden and from 1910-12 he studied at the Art Academy there. Segall was interned during worldwar I because of being a russian citizen. In 1919 he founded with Otto Dix the "Dresdener Sezession" In 1923 he went for the first time to Brazil and in 1925 he stayed, married the Brazilian Jenny Klabin and became Brazilian citizen. He continued to exhibit in Germany and from 1930 onwards he started sculpting. In 1931 he founded the SPAM (Sociedade Paulista de Arte Moderna). In 1957 he died in his home on Sao Paulo. This home was eventually to become museum. |
