Between 1902 and 1908, Savitskii studied at the Penza Art School under his father K. Savitsky, under N. Grandkovsky, and A. Afanasev. From 1908 to 1915 he studied under V Makovsky and F. Rubo at the Petersburg Academy of Arts. Savitsky was among the organizers of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (AKhRR) and taught at the Moscow Surikov Art Institute.
