Sapunov studied 1893-1904 at the Moscow College of painting under Levitan, Serov and Korovin and 1904-1911 at the Imperial Academy in St. Petersburg. From 1900 he worked for the theater. He took part in the exhibitions of the Peredvizhniki,  Mir Iskusstva , Blue Rose and Stefanos. He died by drowning in the gulf of Finland near St. Petersburg.
