Samokhvaklov studied at the Bezhetsk Art School under Kostenko and 1914-18 at the Academy in  St. Petersburg. In 1923 Alexander Samokhvalov graduated from VkhuTeMas (since 1944 known as Ilya Repin Institute) in Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin workshop. Studied with Beliaev and Shukhaev. His painting subjects are mostley portraits, genre and historical pictures. He also worked as an illustrator of fiction and poetry. The leading theme of his oeuvre was the depicting of the Soviet Youth. He was winner of gold medals at the International Art Fair in Paris, France in1925 and 1937. He was awarded Honoured Artist of Russian Federation in 1967.
