Rumyanstsev, son of a captain of the riverboats on the
Volga, Kama and Viatka rivers, often joined his father on his trips and
was captivated by de scenery. He started drawing and would not finish
his regular school education. He went to work in Vyatka and met with
artists whith whom he exchanged artistic information. In 1897 he went to
St. Petersburg and studied at the Art Academy. He became instrumental in
the opening of the first art museum in Vyatka.
